The pharmacy network is anchored by Hobart and Launceston, with Devonport and Burnie serving as the major hubs for the north-west coast. Regional pharmacies in Tasmania often operate with limited nearby specialist healthcare infrastructure, making them important primary care touchpoints for their communities. The Tasmanian Pharmacy Authority, or TPA, regulates pharmacy premises under the Pharmacy Control Act 2001. It's a genuinely separate body from AHPRA. It only deals with premises and business ownership, not pharmacist registration. A TPA application needs a floor plan, preferably professionally drawn and to scale, clearly showing the dispensary's location, dimensions, and boundary, plus the storage and display areas for Schedule 2 and Schedule 3 medicines. Schedule 2 medicines must sit within a marked 4 metre boundary of the dispensary, in clear line of sight from it. That measurement has to be built into the dispensary layout from the first concept drawing, not adjusted in later. The TPA inspects on opening, after any change of ownership, and after any approved alteration. Documentation has to hold up to scrutiny at each of those points, not just the first one.
