Queensland's Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot has allowed eligible pharmacists to assess and manage a defined list of conditions without a GP referral - one of the most significant expansions of pharmacy scope in Australia. This has accelerated demand for purpose-built consultation rooms in Queensland pharmacies that meet Queensland Health's requirements for clinical privacy, equipment, and access. Beyond the South East, the state's geography shapes its pharmacy market considerably: resource-sector communities in the Bowen Basin and North Queensland operate high-turnover dispensaries driven by transient workforces, while coastal pharmacies in the Whitsundays and Cairns region serve significant tourist populations alongside permanent residents. Queensland's pharmacy premises framework changed substantially in 2025. Premises are now regulated by the Pharmacy Business Ownership Council, under the Pharmacy Business Ownership Act 2024. This replaced the old 2001 law, with a transition period for existing owners that started in November 2025. Unlike Victoria or Tasmania, Queensland doesn't require a floor plan to be submitted and approved before trading. Instead, an owner declares the premises meets the required standards when applying for a licence. The Council then verifies this through inspection rather than a pre-approval process, and its own approach to those inspections is still being developed as the new framework beds in. That declaration-based approach doesn't lower the standard your fitout needs to meet, it just moves the verification later, which makes it more important to get the details right the first time rather than relying on a pre-trading review to catch anything missed.
