Airlie Beach is the gateway town for the Whitsunday Islands and one of Queensland's most popular tourist destinations, situated on the central Queensland coast approximately 1,100 kilometres north of Brisbane. The town's permanent population of approximately 10,000 is dwarfed by its tourism throughput, and the local pharmacy market reflects this: high seasonal variation in dispensing volumes, a significant hospitality and marine industry workforce, and a visitor catchment that includes international tourists requiring medication advice and dispensing services.
