Roma is the main service centre of the Maranoa region in southwest Queensland, approximately 480 kilometres west of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway. The town is known as the "Gateway to the Outback" and sits at the intersection of Queensland's beef cattle industry and the Roma gas field - one of Australia's oldest petroleum production areas. Roma Hospital is the main health facility under South West Hospital and Health Service. The pharmacy catchment extends to Mitchell, Injune, Surat, and the surrounding station properties of the Maranoa and Balonne. A significant proportion of the population is engaged in agriculture, petroleum production, or government services, and the town has a younger demographic profile than many comparable-sized rural centres.
