Emerald is the main service centre of the Central Highlands, situated approximately 270 kilometres west of Rockhampton in the southern Bowen Basin coalfield region. The town's economy is driven by two main industries: coal mining (servicing mines at Moranbah, Blackwater, and surrounding fields) and irrigated agriculture in the Nogoa River valley, which produces cotton, citrus, stone fruit, and other crops. Emerald Hospital is the main health facility under Central Queensland Health.
