Newman is a purpose-built mining town situated approximately 1,185 kilometres north of Perth in the East Pilbara, established to service BHP's Mount Whaleback iron ore operation - one of the largest single open-cut iron ore mines in the world. The town's entire economy and population is tied to BHP's operations and the broader East Pilbara mining sector. Newman Hospital provides health services to the resident and FIFO workforce. The community demographic is predominantly working-age and male-skewed, with the resident population supplemented by a large FIFO rotation. Contractor and specialist tradesperson access is severely limited, with virtually all trades sourced from Perth or Karratha.
