Ararat is a small regional centre in the Central Highlands, approximately 200 kilometres west of Melbourne between Ballarat and Horsham on the Western Highway. The town is served by Ararat Hospital under the Grampians Health network. Ararat has a distinctive history: it was the site of one of the largest Chinese settlement communities during Victoria's gold rush era - a heritage commemorated at the Gum San interpretive centre - and it has been home to significant correctional facilities for over 150 years, both of which contribute to Ararat's contemporary community and economic profile.
