Parkes is an agricultural and transport hub in the Central West, approximately 360 kilometres west of Sydney. The town is well known for the CSIRO Parkes Observatory - the radio telescope made famous by the 1969 Moon landing transmissions - but its economic base is primarily agricultural: wheat, canola, and grazing. Parkes is also an emerging inland freight rail hub, with the Inland Rail project expected to further develop Parkes as a logistics interchange point.
